Overview
We've built up the picture: an ancient survival brain that uses dopamine to nudge you toward the things that keep you alive.
It is a good system.
It helps you move toward food, water, connection, sex, safety, belonging, achievement, and relief. It helps you notice what matters and remember what worked.
Now let's watch what happens when something comes along that this system was never built to handle.
A simple way to picture the ordinary range
First, a scale to make this easier to see.
There are not literally "units" of dopamine you can count up like coins. The brain is far messier than that. But for teaching, imagine an ordinary dopamine-related homeostasis range from **40 to 100**.
Think of 40 as the lower edge of ordinary functioning: the kind of day when motivation is low, getting started feels difficult, and ordinary rewards barely register.
Think of 100 as the upper edge of what normal life can naturally produce: a deeply meaningful connection, a major accomplishment, an exciting experience, or one of the best days you can remember.
Most of life moves somewhere inside that band. The brain rises and falls, but it keeps trying to return to balance.
There is one more distinction we need before the chart makes sense.
**Liking** is the high or rewarding effect experienced in the moment.
**Wanting** is the motivational pull toward it: the anticipation, attention, and drive to pursue it.
In ordinary life, liking and wanting usually travel together. You want the meal, you enjoy the meal, and the brain remembers that it was worth repeating.

*Natural rewards usually operate within the brain's ordinary homeostatic range. Initial substance use can push the liking/high track beyond that range while also teaching the wanting system that the experience is highly important.*

When something pushes the system beyond its range
The good things in life - food, connection, sex, achievement, movement, belonging - can raise motivation and enjoyment toward the top of the ordinary range.
That is the system doing its job:
> *This mattered.* > *Remember it.* > *Move toward it again.*
But mood- and mind-altering substances can create a different kind of signal.
At least initially, they can push the liking/high track beyond what ordinary life can naturally produce. In the teaching chart, this is shown as the high rising above 100, then returning toward baseline.
The exact numbers are not the point.
The shape is the point.
The person begins inside the ordinary range, experiences an unusually powerful substance-related high, and then returns toward their previous level.
The wanting system also learns from that experience. It begins tagging the substance - and the cues around it - as unusually important.
This is where the problem starts.
Not because the person is bad.
Not because the brain is broken.
But because the survival brain is learning from a signal that is stronger than ordinary life was designed to produce.
Now imagine you are the brain
Picture yourself as the brain.
You are sealed inside a skull, in the dark, with no direct window to the outside world.
Everything you know about what is happening out there arrives as chemical and electrical signals.
That is all you get.
Then one day, an unusually powerful reward signal arrives - higher than anything food, water, connection, or achievement has ever produced.
From inside the skull, you have no way to know the full outside story.
You cannot see the social setting.
You cannot see the consequences that may follow.
You cannot say:
> *That came from a substance, so I should ignore it.*
All you know is the signal.
And the signal is enormous.
So the brain draws the only conclusion it knows how to draw:
> **Whatever just happened must be incredibly important.**
This is the first part of the hijacking.
The brain is not responding to the moral meaning of the event.
It is responding to the size and reliability of the signal.
Why the brain remembers it
Dopamine does not just say, *that felt good.*
It also says:
> *Pay attention.* > *Remember this.* > *Move toward it again.*
That is useful when the reward is food, safety, connection, or achievement. You want the brain to remember how to find what keeps you alive.
But if a substance produces a much stronger signal than ordinary rewards, the learning system can over-prioritise it.
The brain does not simply record:
> *That was enjoyable.*
It records something closer to:
> *That mattered.* > *That worked.* > *That may be needed again.*
And because memory systems are involved, the brain does not only remember the substance.
It can also remember the people, places, times of day, emotional states, smells, sounds, songs, stressors, and thoughts that surrounded it.
That is why addiction is not only about the chemical effect of the substance.
It is also about learning.
The brain begins building associations.
Where was I?
Who was I with?
What was I feeling?
What happened just before?
What relief came after?
The event becomes tagged.
And once something is tagged by the survival brain as important, it becomes easier to notice, easier to remember, and easier to move toward again.
The first dysfunction
This is the first piece of the missing middle from Part 1.
The organ is the brain.
The symptoms are the cravings, the loss of control, the repeated return despite harm.
And the first part of the dysfunction is this:
> **The reward-learning system begins treating a substance as more important than it really is.**
Not consciously.
Not morally.
Biologically.
The brain has received a powerful signal and has started organising attention, memory, and motivation around it.
That does not mean the person has no choices.
It means the choices are now happening inside a brain that has begun assigning the substance unusual importance.
The wanting system has learned:
> *Go toward this.*
And that learning can become stronger with repetition.
Why this matters
This is why early addiction can be so confusing.
From the outside, it can look like someone is simply choosing the same thing again.
From the inside, something more complicated is happening.
A survival system has started giving the substance a level of importance it does not deserve.
The person may still like it.
They may still feel the high.
They may also begin wanting it more strongly than makes sense.
That difference matters.
Because later in addiction, liking and wanting can separate.
The high can fade.
The pull can remain.
For now, the key point is this:
> **Addiction does not begin only with pleasure. It begins with learning.**
The brain learns that something matters.
Then it learns the fastest route back to it.
Then it starts building the pathway.
Where this leads
At first, the substance may feel powerful because it pushes the system above the ordinary range.
But the brain does not like being pushed outside its range for long.
The body is always trying to return to balance.
That is what bodies do.
If you get too hot, you sweat.
If you get too cold, you shiver.
If a chemical signal keeps pushing the reward system beyond its ordinary range, the brain will begin adapting.
And that adaptation changes everything.
The first problem is reward learning.
The next problem is what happens when the brain tries to rebalance.
